FYI....White pencils

Post by woodrat » Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:29 pm

Hi everyone...I found these today at my local newsagent. I was in there to buy a couple of white Chinagraph pencils to mark dark woods. The thing that I hate about Chinagraph pencils is that they get blunt after about an inch so they dont last very long....
...anyway I found these....they are called a white charcoal pencil and they are much harder and take a nice sharp point and make a nice clear mark....just what the luthier ordered I think!

I hope its useful...

John

I'll have to keep an eye out on this side of the Tassy John, I had a white pencil once but had to by the whole bleedin colouring set for it ( I think it was a Faber Castle set, not cheap but was the only one that had white in it) & the lead/core was very soft & became a stub in short order! I'm using a yellow now but it's very waxy & doesn't show up very well even on the Blackwood I'm working with at the moment.

Nick, I found mine at the local news agent but there are some on eBay out of the States....I paid $3.50 AUD for mine so these ones would be a bit more exe....

In the UK get mine from an Artist supply shop that behave like ordinary pencils and can be sharpened using an ordinary pencil sharpener. There are some advertised specifically for wood here that look similar:

Hi Nick

You have a Gordon Harris store in your fair city, at 34 Southwark Street, Christchurch 8011. I havent been in that one, but I would hazard a guess that you will find all sorts of white pencils (pretty sure I have seen them sold individually) in there plus many other wonderful goodies that you will find hard to resist. You have been warned!

Cheers
Richard

John
I found exactly the same ones in my local newsagent last weekend - after looking for months for a good white pencil. I agree, they are just the go.
Well spotted!

Thanks Richard, I did a bit of surfing after John brought this thread up & found an online kiwi artists supplies that stocked these, so I ordered a dozen. Funny though, if I'd been offshore the delivery estimate was quicker than I'll get them in the South Island.

I've been shopping this week for white pens or pencils with no luck, thanks for the heads up on this one. I've got a tray of ones that don't do the job.

If you can't find them locally, you can get them from Cheap Joe's in a 12pk. http://www.cheapjoes.com/prod/GPC558/

Officeworks list these pencils in their online catlogue as a special order, $12.48 for a box of 12.
Eckersley's art and craft http://www.eckersleys.com.au sell them in a two pack plus sharpener, wow! for $5.95.

I can recommend Derwent colouring pencils from the Lake District in Old Blighty. They show up great on rosewood and they don't wear down too quickly. They are not cheap though, as colouring pencils go.
