I am in Adelaide and building my first solidbody electric guitar as a year 12 school project. This guitar is being built as part of a new year 12 subject in South Australia known as "research project" which contributes to my University entry score. I have created a website to record my progress at http://guitarbuild.wetpaint.com/. I would appreciate any comments on this build (good or bad) from the experienced luthier membership of this forum.
Thanks,
Lachlan

I don't mind the shape at all
Not keen on positioning of controls, I'd rather have them closer to hand.
You realise the bridge slope has to be the other way for a lefty?

Looks like you're a fan of the Parker Fly. I'll be interested to see your progression.
Got in mind an electric thinline for the build after the one I'm in now.....

Re: Newbie guitar builder help
Lachlan, thats one cool guitar, well done so far.
First thing I must say is that lefties rock, second I like the shape (but I would rather have a Tele) and especially the peg head.
Your build site is very detailed and there is clearly a lot of thought going into your build. If this is your first guitar, that's very impressive.
I have no doubt it will turn out very well indeed.
I dont really have any advice, but I am not sure you need it! There are plenty of people here who build stunning electrics - if you havent had a look through the gallery pages then I suggest you do, there's plenty of inspiration there.
The biggest mistake I made with my solid body electrics was to make them too heavy - the sustain is great, but you struggle to play them for that long - I'll be chambering the next one I build. I suggest you try a few and see what weight you like then check yours against that.
Otherwise good luck!!
Cheers

I'm impressed with your work so far. I like the shape too - very cool.
Good to see you wearing your safety gear, make sure you're wearing it in any pics you use in your report. The people marking your work might not know much about guitars, but they will pick-up on dangerous work practices.
What are you hoping to do at uni?

Re: Newbie guitar builder help
Unlike most young electric builders you appear to be actually using a plan......this is a good habit to get into. Working without a plan leads to screw ups and wasting of time...and timber.
