Radius dish, sanding

Post by auscab » Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:09 pm

I have read here about replacing the sand paper in a dish with strips or floor sanding discs.

Has any one heard of it being done by spreading glue in the dish and giving it a sprinkle of the grit size desired ?
Black silicon carbide 80 grit is pretty cheap .

Nope I haven't. At first it sounds like a cheap way to go, but how are you doing to handle refreshing the grit when the stuff in the dish gets old and broken down? If you keep adding to it you end up changing the dish's radius.

But if you're going to give this a go, I'd suggest auto body trim spray adhesive. It'll give you and even coat that goes on quickly and when you let it dry it isn't going to flake off.

I just use strips of sandpaper. Can't cost more than a few dollars each time.

Hi Lillian. I was thinking possibly that the dish could be sealed with poly urethane or two pack then the glue to hold the grit could be water based. HHG or PVA . wash it of then start again. All I would have to keep on the shelf is a jar of grit.

You are right about the cost Paul . I'm still married which must mean I am good at hiding the real cost

I once pulled up outside home with a nice second hand guitar that I had to get inside without being spotted. the wife was across the road talking to a neighbor and saw me pull up. I had to time it between her glances at me. I got away with it that time ,it gave me enough time to break the news gently.
In fact I rarely get away with any thing like that . The Lady has a sixth sense about such purchases.and I have to arm myself with a good reason before I step in the door.

I order stuff and 90% of the time it arrives just after Ive left for work.

Items that Ive ordered that are due to arrive at the end of this week just after I head back to work:

1. An Hitachi 1/2" router.........I now own two of these routers.....plus two other routers...and two lam trimmers.
2. A helmet mounted video camera for my bike.
3. An HP 17C calculator.......my 26 year old HP41 died last week so Ill get away with this one.

Add in a stash of wood Ill be picking up down the south coast on Wednesday and Ive got a fair bit of explaining to do.

I bought a couple of self adhesive, 24" sanding disks from Tippie at Blues Creek guitars in the States.

http://www.bluescreekguitars.com

They are $18.95 each and I've radiused over 50 instruments with them and they don't even look like wearing out.

Which is about 38 cents a guitar.

I reckon that's cheap enough. :D

How do you explain that one. :)

1 , I want to re live the ride ?
or
2 , I want to prove who just tried to run me down ?

It is cheap when you look at it that way Bob :D
I am chicken counting before they have hatched though.
and was thinking
" if I had a stack of twenty dishes ,is there a cheaper way for me to cover them ,that would work " so I could under cut the competition.

Sounds like a book named "Contemporary good reasons" is way overdue.
