Sand paper on radius dish

Post by luke_lee » Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:02 pm

Hello all,

I am after some advice on the best way to line my radius work board with sandpaper. They are made from MDF and I have concerns about the paper wearing out and destroying the dish when trying to replace the paper.

What is the best way to adhere the paper?
Best type of paper (fabric backed, supplier)?
Grit?

Thanks Luke

Im a cheap arse. I line the dish with double sided carpet tape and then lay on strips of 120 grit sand paper. Not as perfect as adhesive backed paper but it works for me. When I have to change the paper I peel off the old paper and double sided tape and clean up the dish with meths or acetone.

Note..my dishes have a protective coat of polyurethane varnish on them.

First, varnish the dish!

Use 60 or 80 grit paper and stick it down with stick glue (the stuff kids use for sticking stuff into scrap books). When you have to change the paper, which is not very often (~ every 20-30 or so guitars) the old paper comes of with water. Klingspor paper works well.

Varnish both sides and the rim.

I use 3M spray adhesive to fix the 24" disk on.

Where do you get your 24" discs from now Allen?

My old supplier of them dried up...

I got mine from LMI...they sent wrong sizes initially (their mistake) so they said keep the ones they'd sent and they'd send the correct ones for free....cant fault that for great service.

I stick my dishes to another piece of 16mm MDF to reduce chances of warping and then varnish both sides.

I haven't needed any in a long time. I got them from Cairns Hardware who had to order them in from their sandpaper supplier.

I told them that they are floor sanding disks but they didn't believe me. When they did show up they said "Do you know what these things are for? Sanding floors....who would have thought?"

I could go to just about any decent hardware shop in Canada and pick up as many as I wanted when we lived there. Last time I layer a hardwood floor (in 2001) they cost me $5 each.

You can use the standard blue back 80 grit sheets from bunnings. Just butt them up and then trim the outside edge. It works fine.

And don't forget to pick up a couple of snags while you're there.

Darn - a little out of range to swing by... :D

I know the sandpaper wholesalers have them so it seems a special order is required. I have not been able to find them 'off the shelf' for some time and just hoped you knew a convenient online supplier.

Never mind.

Jeremy.

I got mine from John Hall in the States.

http://www.bluescreekguitars.com/shop/i ... cts_id=201

They will last forever. I've done 60 guitars on the same paper (80 grit) and they are no where near needing replacing.
