Depends on what you are wanting to do with your design. If it's simple 2D design then DraftSight by Solid Works which is free is the best there is, but learning curve is much like AutoCad. A bit steep. It works on both Windoze and Mac.

For 3D design then you start to get a bit more complicated and there are heaps of contenders out there with varying degrees of complexity and cost. For me the hands down best there is by a country mile is SpaceClaim Engineer. Works on Windoze only, but I've got my Mac partitioned with bootcamp and run SpaceClaim on a MacBook Pro with no worries at all.

It depends what you mean by "Design"! If you're just looking for something that will help you draw outline shapes of guitar bodies, try this:

http://gicl.cs.drexel.edu/people/sevy/l ... tware.html

Scroll down to the Guitar Design application. It works very well and you can even do headstocks and bridges on it too, though it wasn't designed for that.

There's lots of other great stuff on Jon's site if you dig around.

If you want acoustic or structural design for guitars, that's a very different kettle of fish...

Unfortunately, it seems that this will only work predictably with pre OSX Macs. When I tried to run the .sea file, I got a message that is is damaged or incomplete, and an "Automator" window opened - not sure what that's about.

Any ideas how to run it on more up to date Mac's?

Files with a .sea suffix need to be decompressed using "Stuffit"......its a Mac compression utility.

Thanks Martin. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Got an error message when I tried to decompress with Stuffit expander.

If the Mac version of the Jon Sevy software isn't working for you, email Jon direct. He's very help and put the software up there for people to use. If it's not working, he'll likely help you out. He was kind enough to help me out when I had some issues with the Windows version.

Thanks,

I went back to look for his e-mail address and found that I had downloaded the wrong version - I had the legacy mac version, when I should have downloaded the Java application - the Java 1.2 version works fine.
