Spray equipment

Post by moobox » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:17 am

To begin with let me tell you that I have not built an instrument yet. I have been lurking around here and readingt plenty interesting stuff as I gear myself up to build. Now I have a half built uke of mahagany and I plan to French polish that. But I have come across a spray painting apparatus that interests me and I hope that you folks can tell me toi laugh it off or to go with it. It is the Bosch fine sporay systems of which there are three models. I have added a link to the products below. Now, I know that I could probably get a hobby setup with compressor, tubes and gun for not much more but for part time build I wonder if the midrange PFS65 wouldnt be the ticket.

Hi Ed

I think the pfs65 looks like it was designed to spray heavy bodied material like house paint. I had a look at the manual and it appears to be a pressure pot system, with air supply down the stem to the top of the fluid chamber, helping to push the paint to the nozzle. It's the sort of gun I would choose to spray gesso for a gilding base but not shellac.

For shellac I use a small touch up siphon spray gun or an airbrush for detail areas.

Yes the pressure pots are good fior large deposits of paint, for a fine deposit rate as that required for lacquering you need a gun with a better tip control, ideally a LVHP, low volume high pressure will give a fine finish the other style HVLP w high volume low pressure will also work but you need to be a bit more careful becuase of the heavier application it applies

If you want to paint the barn or tractor then go for it. Otherwise pick something that is suited to spay automotive paint.

Rule of thumb, if an automotive spray professional couldn't make it work for their job, then it's not going to do the trick in an untrained persons hands.
