Replacing the Selctor switch in a Yamaha Archtop.

Post by ozwood » Sun May 29, 2011 8:09 pm

Hi all,

I want to pick the collective brain that is this forum.

The Selector switch on my mates Yamaha Archtop is Kaphut, I'm struggling to work out how the hell they got all the bit's in in the first place let alone how the hell I'm going to get the PUP selector out , thought about fixing some string to the switch and trying to pull it out through the F hole ! any other idea's ? anyone ever succesfully completed such a task ? or do I take to it with a Router and make a Cover for the hole ? least prefered option.

Cheers,

Paul.

Generally through the pickup holes, and yes you do need to tie something onto it so you can pull it back through.
Can be a bugger of a job.

Been there, done that. Hopefully they put in enough wire to let you get out the switch without having to remove anything else. I have used nylon fishing line but I like the idea of dental floss. I would use a small mirror to check that the path to get to the f-hole won't tangle it up with the rest of the wiring. It's a good job to test your patience if things go wrong.

I've used a tip I think Dan Erlewine put out there sometime ago, I use 1/4" ID rubber hose, the reddish 'natural' rubber stuff, it's small enough wall thickness that it should fit through the mounting hole. You push it onto the selector knob, remove the holding nut & washer, the hose will be sturdy enough to push the switch back down through it's hole & into the guitar far enough to be able to 'jiggle' it close to either the pickup hole or F hole. Keep the hose there & the replacement is a reverse of the procedure, pulling the hose & the switch has to follow it back up through the mounting hole, it removes the "P in the A" factor considerably. Takes me longer to desolder the old switch & solder on a new one than the removal/replacement procedure. Works with pots as well.
Just another possibility to add to the pot (no pun intended  ) along with the floss one.

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Does it matter what flavour dental floss you use?
