HELP! Petrol spill on my NGRW

Post by Tonxi » Fri May 20, 2011 5:15 pm

I just bought my first plank of tonewood. 155x29x1250 perfectly QS NGRW. It has been sawn for at least 20 years. If you tap it it rings pure for about 5 or 6 seconds and then, takes another second or 2 for the tops to decay as the bass rolls on. I paid $12.40 for it. It looks good.
I spilled petrol on one end. Should I wash it with water, ethanol, nothing, something else?
Martyn

The glass is half full... but I'll have another while your up!

It's not over until Ricky Pontin cries! (Not long now).

Great minds like a think!

Hi Martyn, I shouldnt worry too much about it, most of it should have evaporated away and any residue should be sent flying as you mill/saw/sand it. At 29mm thick I expect that you are going to resaw it and then sand or plane to thickness. Therefore it should be lost in the process. Nice find though!

Go for it!

For most things like that you can use Shellite to clean any residue off if it really worries you. With gasoline you're not going to have much left unless you've mixed it with oil for a 2 stroke engine.

That is what I hoped to hear. $12.40 seemed like a bargain at the time but I am feeling the withdrawal symptoms all too soon.
Unless I am badly mistaken, I seem to have fast onset WAS!
Also I am now tempted to try to resaw this and do it before, or in conjunction with the sets I got from you.
I get the saw on Tuesday.

Hey Ya Martyn,

Is there a cure for WAS :D because I'm getting a bad dose of it,there's no use asking the woodrat for a cure, he's got the full blown disease and doesnt care, I've seen his stash.

Cheers Tod :gui

I think that if I can save 1 plank of tonewood every time I use my car, that I can more than offset my carbon footprint!
Probably?
Now if only I can convince the wife.

When you spill hydrocarbons on wood, you should ask " what would Jimi do?"
A lighted match waved over the wood will soon get rid of that nasty petrol smell lol

My first time back for a while have things changed? site looks different or is it my computer.
Anyway, I had this big log of Burdekin Plum some years ago and some borers had got into part of it, a mate of mine who knows about these things said he could get rid of them and doused the timber in avgas from his chopper. It worked and no staining.

I can't even afford a compressor and spray gun setup let alone a chopper!
I bet it gives a great finish though! :gui

No, No, No, you dont have to buy a chopper, you just need someone with access to flying fuel, or the likes.

JP8 burns nicely.

Taffy, its been a while since your last visit. Bob switched host after the meltdown and went through a software upgrade. You ought to drop by more often and visit . We enjoy your company.
