Bridge/Scale length

Post by Tod Gilding » Tue May 10, 2011 9:01 pm

Hi All, Does anyone think this tool might be useable for luthiery ?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Laser-Level-Hori ... 4158f249f7

I'm thinking along the lines , for finding saddle/Bridge placement and height, maybe built into some sort of Jig ?

And then I wonder how to find out how accurate it is.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't do the job as well as a simple piece of string or thread does - once you have read it's instruction manual...

Like Marcus I can't see this to be any better than a good 600mm rule for checking alignment & levels but it's cheap enough, might be worth a purchase & playing around to see what can be acheived. Although Matthew has a really cool use for lasers (see his double bass build, first page)!

I lurk around these parts sometimes, and once in a while I have something to contribute. I guess this is one of those times!

I use laser levels a couple ways. Clipped to a shelf above the workbench, with the laser beaming straight down, I use it sometimes to do a rough check the neck alignment with the body. Also, it works to check neck cross-sections, sort of like holding a card over the neck to cast a shadow, only the laser can also work in the heel area owing to its coherent nature. Like this:
