Inexpensive guitar strings

Post by Bob Connor » Thu Feb 10, 2011 8:20 am

I just ordered 30 sets of guitar strings from this company in Hong Kong

http://mid.auctivacommerce.com/Acoustic ... ?sid=22657

Now these are probably the worst guitar strings I've ever used but they cost about $2 landed so I use them as the first set of strings that go on a guitar for setup, they get thrown out when I'm happy with everything and a then a decent set gets put on.

The cheapest set I can get from the local music shop is around 12 bucks so these are a real money saver.

Anyone know any other sources of cheap strings for setup?

Regards
Bob, Geelong

For that price they must rumage backstage for the old strings after a G3 concert & give 'em a good boilup & repackage! Ha $20 for ten sets....can't go wrong for setup strings though. $40 for ten sets of "High Quality" strings even! Mind you, I love the coloured copper wound strings just for fun value alone, one of my guitars would look good with a nice set of blue strings on :D .
Good find Bob.

Any Taiwanese squid boat base....you need to have a peg on your nose while using these strings though, they smell a bit squiddy.

I've bought Martin bulk strings from the US. Might have been Strings by Mail, or Just Strings. Don't recall now. They were around $4 AUD landed as a set I think and that was when the AUD was way down against the USD.

I get strings from Juststrings too. Shipping is $40 for pretty much any size order, but if you get enough packs it works out cheaper than anywhere else I've found.

You might explore http://webstrings.com. I used them for more than 10 years, playing and my son used them on his electric and steel string acoustic guitars. Also a couple of performers I know at the Ren Fest use them on guitars and mandolins. Hard to beat the prices when you buy a couple of dozen sets at a time. I noticed that they are out of stock on some popular items right now, but I'm sure that won't last long.

I couldn't help notice that the Hong Kong outfit also sold a brand called Ming. Can't seeing minging guitars competing with martin guitars any time soon.
