Lacewood on Koa/Tazzie blackwood?

Post by Rod True » Thu Dec 30, 2010 2:46 am

Has any of you guys used Lacewood bindings on Koa or Tazzie blackwood? I'm sort of on the fence with the look of it and would love to see some pics of any of you have done it. I got a set from Allied that they are calling Brazilian Lacewood.

Thanks

Hi Rod.

Haven't tried the combo so can't really comment there for you, although I feel it could be done well.

Just for clarification though, the 'Brazilian Lacewood' is a different timber species to that which comes from Australia. We generally don't call it 'Lacewood' over here, that being I believe a generic common name applied mostly by the US market. Here the most common timber referred to as this would be what we commonly call 'Silky Oak', although we have many species that feature similar grain. They vary in weight, density, colour and figure so really, each piece would have to be judged on its own merit for a given task. Common names are misleading...

Jeremy.

Ya, I've been reading on the OLF about the "lacewood" consiracy. You poor folk down under gettin mis represented all too often.

Allied also lists Silver Oak as a "lacewood".

And actually, after reading the descriptions of the Brazilian lacewood and the silver oak, I'd say I have the silver oak. It's not hard like a rosewood, more like redwood.

Again, just one the fence a bit to much....
