Latest Edition of Australian Wood Review
Latest Edition of Australian Wood Review
Just picked up the latest edition of Aussie Wood Review and it includes articles on the following:
- An introduction to spray finishing <==== not as comprehensive and useful as Allen's excellent ANZLF tute but a good basic starter.
- Bandsaw tune up <=== the photo tute on how to fold a bandsaw blade is VERY useful.
- Milling and drying your own timber
- Review of honing guides
Cheers Martin

The videos are great but they don't feature Phil Ashby's lovely nude nut!

The way I was always taught is a similar method to that but without the 'squash' at the start. Blade can be held in it's natural radius, as you turn your hand you then also move it down. Takes no more than 3-4 seconds to coil a blade even the big hua's. And I have a partially nude nut...does that count?

I'm with Nick, the guy in the vid takes the long road. I hold the blade with both hands, palms facing out. Lift the blade and roll the wrist in and at the same time walk the blade into the floor or a wall as you follow the coil with your arms...all very fluid when you have the knack. If the blade is small its even quicker as you just just flick it down and roll in the wrist and it will coil.

I built myself a huge workshop so I can hang my blades on the wall without having to fold them up all macrame kung fu style.

I've never had a problem coiling bandsaw blades -- can't remember where I picked up my technique. BUT, uncoiling the damn things with some semblance of control is another matter. Safest way I know is to toss the coiled blade onto the lawn and stand back -- not always the most practical technique.
