Why should we have all the fun. Tim's Name that wood threads have got me re-inspired to have a look around me so I have been spending a bit of time with botany book and saw in hand bush walking.

Jim, that sure looks like African Blackwood.
However, that seems too obvious.
I'll just hang around till someone knowledgable answers....

Yes, I agree, "saw in hand bush walking" is a red herring! That's African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) or I am a monkey's uncle (Pan troglodytes unclebobii.)
Another damn Yank!
Re: Name this wood.....Tim
If there's African Blackwood trees along the bushwalking tracks in Darwin I'll be driving the ute up with a chainsaw and some of those sexy chaps you get to wear.
Re: Name this wood.....Tim
Australian Ebony diospyros humilis and diospyros ferrea varieties, yours would most likely be the later Jim.
Edit: Ferrea appears to be a synonym of Humilis just an older botanical listing for the same plant which is a true member of the Diospyros family with the common name 'Australian Ebony'
Cheers

Re: Name this wood.....Tim
African blackwood, I wish. At about $700us a set finding it in the bush is about the only way I could see myself building with that. It does look a bit the same though from what I have seen of it (pics only).
I though I may get lucky enough to a couple of two piece fret boards out of this but no such luck, the best I will do is maybe some nice book matched head plates and maybe a bridge or two if I include a sapwood stripe.
Kim was close enough for the bush though as without flowers and fruit it would be hard to pinpoint the exact species.
There are 6 different Diospyros up here, the three I have info on are D. littorea (mangrove community) D. Maritima (coastal vine thicket) and D compacta (coastal vine thicket and inland as well).
This one is D.compacta judging on where it came from and its growth habit. I might get lucky in the future and find a bit suitable for a fret board

Looks like the Adelaide - Darwin rail line is missing one of its sleepers.

Next time I will leave it till later in the day Tim. I have a few more species that I am searching for at the moment but I have to walk further along the railway tracks to get them (and pick the days when the train is not running). They should be much better for fret board/bridges as they are bigger trees than the Diospyros.

Note that the girl on the left has a tail - looks prehensile too! So, maybe these are proto-humans, and the females of this species simply appear a "bit" more evolved than the two small males. May have to check with Lillian for a ruling on this, but my wife would agree!

It works for me.
Um, wait, we are talking about being marooned on a desert island right?
