Getting some finish on this beast at present.

Blackwood drop top on Swamp Ash.

It'll be fitted out with gold fittings and a set of Lindy Fralin Blues specials.

That's crisp work there Bob - nice
Love the deep rich hue of that Blackwood and the impeccable finish to boot. I'm finishing off (3/4's built) a Tele for a customer at present too. He didn't want a figured cap though, instead opting for a Qld. Walnut Cap on a pale Blackwood body. Solid Qld Walnut Neck, Ring Gidgee Fretboard and Qld Maple scratchplate to suit. It'll have some custom wound Mick Brierleys in it - a bucker bridge and a P90 neck. Few mods to the standard tele shape as well - lower rounded horn and an angled back headstock of my design.

Look forward to seeing yours finished up.

It'll look great with the gold hardware.

It's also getting a standard tele tortoiseshell scratch plate.

I know it's going to cover a heap of nice wood but I really don't like the look of teles without the scratchplate.

Got some finish on to it and it's come up pretty well. It didn't behave itself and kept getting pinholes in the finish so I don't know how many times it got rubbed back and re-done. It's probably got 35 coats on it.

Looking good Bob, looks like the time spent on the finish has paid off big time.
Must be the season of the solid body guitar I started on one about a month ago, I love the Tele shape so mine is based on that classic profile too.

I hope you didn't have to rub back by hand. That'd be enough to drive a man to drink, provide his arms weren't too sore to lift a coldie.

Mate - I'm looking like Popeye. I don't use sanders on finish and prefer to do them by hand. But I'm bloody thirsty.

If I could get a pneumatic sander so I could slosh lots of water at it I'd be happy but the pre-cat nitro balls up a bit on dry orbital sanding.

So it's a sanding block and elbow grease. I actually don't mind it and I feel it results in a better finish.

Usually start at 400 then 600, 800,1000 and 1200 before a rub with fine micromesh then it's to the buffer with fine Menzerna. I use one of those small Ubeaut swansdown buffs on the drill press.

Have you ever tried "pulling " the lacquer like french polish. Make up a "rubber" as you do for french polishing and then wet it up with thinners.The action is like polishing and once you get a feel for getting the lacquer soft it can be manipulated around and pushed into the pores.Let it dry again and have a look for more pores.Just like french polish you have to have a bit of a build of lacquer before you start and be careful not to burn through.It takes a while to build it again in that spot if you do.A test piece is advisable but worth the effort.
