More Ukes

Hi all,

I thought all you uke builders might enjoy these photos. One is a vintage "Kumalae" built entirely from Koa. It is cracked on the top and bottom. The sides and neck are ok. The second one is Qld Maple. Both belonged to my friend Robbie's father. He built the Maple one when the Koa was no longer playable. The Maple uke doesn't have any lining and the sides feel about 10 mm thick.

I plan on restoring the "Kumalae", but no time soon. I'll publish photos when the thing is pulled apart. From what I can see, there's only one brace on the bottom, between the sound hole and the bridge. And the top has a brace on either side of the sound hole and a very thin piece of timber under the bridge and also has violin linings.

In a Qld. tradition I made a room of the verandah on the other side of the wall. I'v gone from 27 l.m. to 13 l.m. of verandah. Sad but I needed the space.

That's about right for one of Jonahs ukes! Note the koa used and when you get inside you'll see it's a rough as anything. I bet it sounded fantatsic when it was playable...
