Baltic Birch plywood???

Post by chrapladm » Sat Jun 06, 2009 7:09 pm

Hello I am trying to find where in South Australia I can buy some Baltic Birch(BB) Plywood? I am needing some for bass guitar rig I am building and need to find a supplier. There is a place in Melbourne called Plyco that sells the lumber and will cut to size for me but they have not told me a price. AND I would hate to see how much shipping is going to be.

So does anyone know of limber yard that is in Adelaide that sells BB plywood?

And worst case scenario does anyone know where I can get a price on BB plywood?

Thanks for anyone who can help.

Gunnersons perhaps. They probably deliver free. They do here.

I sent them an email so thanks.

They look like a wholesale company so I am not sure I can buy directly from them. They say you can buy there products at Bunning's and Miter 10 an other places. I have not seen BB though at Bunning's nor Miter 10. But hopefully Gunnersons will be able to help .

Try these guys. I got some birch ply off them a year or two ago. It wasnt cheap and they had to order in but service was fairly good and they delivered. You can also go down and pick up from their warehouse (in Welland from memory)

Better to phone handypine and to talk to one of their people...theyre fairly helpful.

Does Handypine cut to size any of their lumber?

I know Bunning does but the Bunnings at Marion can't cut a straight edge for some reason.

I imagine if you pop into their yard theyd probably cut up sheet stock for you.

What's so special about Baltic Birch plywood?

And I thought BB just meant "B" grade, both sides.

Baltic Birch is made up of quality solid veneers. Its not riddled with voids. It also has more plys than regular plywood, making it very uniform, stable and strong.

I have used other plywoods before and they cant take as much of a beating and stay durable as the BB. I will be applying a coating of Easytread on the finished product to make sure they remain abrasion proof.

How does it rate against marine plywood?

What Matthew said.

Marine grade Fijian mahogany ply is pretty good stuff, no voids, cheap and made from genuine mahogany.
