:) Hello people, thought i'd say hello, this sounds like a good forum to be part of. I've just finished my second archtop acoustic with a pickup fitted and am midway through my 3rd. I've finished my first 2 in shellack but intend to use nitro on the 3rd. Has anyone else used both? and if so, what different characteristics are apparent between the two?

Hi Rocket and welcome to the ANZLF. Any chance of some pics of your instruments?

G'day and welcome Rocket.

If you use mozilla as I do you may have trouble with the uploading the pics. When I need to do that I use Internet Explorer. Just clic 'upload picture' just above and to the right of the text box, a new window will open, then click brows, select your pic and click send, once it has loaded you need to then click 'insert picture' at the bottom of the image.

I hope that helps

Jim

G'day Rocket and welcome.

I've enabled the upload pic feature on your account.

We have to do this manually as it's good to turn it off for the Kiwis every now and then or they just keep uploading sheep pictures.

Morning Rocket and welcome.

I use Mozilla Firefox for a browser. No issues with photos really.

Click on the Upload picture button. A small window will open, (is your Pop-up blocker stopping it?) Type in the file location or click on Browse. Navigate to the picture you want to add. Select it and click okay. This will bring back to the first small window. Click on Send. There will be a preview window that pops up. At the bottom of the picture, you'll probably have to scroll down, there are two options for inserting a picture, standard or insert and upload another one. Either will work. Click on one and thats it. A string of code gets stuck in your message. Preview it to make sure that it's formatted the way you want it.

Do be aware of the picture size. There is a restriction. There are a couple photo re-sizing add ons that work a treat and are free.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum Rocket.

I've only used Mirotone, and shellac for sealing inside bodies, so can't speak first hand about the differences. I put together a "How To" in the tutorial section for applying lacquer. Many have told me that they found it very helpful.

Very retro Rocket, looks as cool as a jazz solo. I like the way the stripe spreads out onto the head stock and the wood scratch guard.

Couple of nice axes there Rocket, the soundboard on your first...is it Spruce or another wood? Or is it just the way it's finished? Also how did you brace them, did you use the 'X' bracing or the parallel?
I like the insert down the centre of the soundboard on your second BTW.

Thanks Nick, Yeah the top is sitka spruce, finished in shellack with a bit of yellow tint added. The back and sides are Figian mahogany, parralell bracing. The second guitar is sitka spruce with x bracing, with rock maple back, jarrah sides, maple and jarrah 3 piece neckand jarrah head stock veneer. finished in super blonde shellack. To me i think number 2 sounds more crisp and pewerfull, hope it's the bracing but the timber has something to do with it.

Thanks Rocket for clearing that up, the first looked quite dark which got me wondering but the Shellac would explain it.
I would say it's more a case of woods used on your second that would give it that crisp sound because usually it's the other way around with the X giving a more mellow tone, along with the bracing the top is thicker & slightly less responsive. My parallel braced just jumps with 'fresh crispness' & snap, crackle, pop :D compared to the X braced, having said that string choice can make a difference too, flatwounds (more mellow) as compared to roundwounds (bright). I compromise and use half rounds 8)
