50's Strat copy

Post by JRCash71 » Fri May 01, 2009 1:16 pm

Hi Guys,

I thought I would post a question that someone may help me with. I am looking a building my own 50's Strat, I can not justify the money to buy a custom shop and thought I would have a crack a building one. I have seen the places on the net that sell bodies and necks but I was hoping that someone here could point me in the right direction for bodies and necks.

Firstly welcome to the best forum on the net J R :) and some pics of the finished beast (when you do) always go down a treat in these parts!:D I have always made my own parts but I believe Warmoth do a good range of quality neck & body parts as well as hardware. Places like Stewmac do much of the retro hardware and even finished bodies if you don't want to get too deeply into the process & just want to bolt things together. You've probably checked them out already but I suggest just spending lots of time trawling as many internet sights as you can. I can spend days sometimes & remember.......Google is your friend

If you want to actually build from scratch from lumps of real hewn forest wood then read as much as you can from books and forums, As well as this one (which errs more toward acoustic axes) there's..... Official luthiers forum, MIMF  who have sections dedicated just to people building 'lectrics as do several other sites I can't think of right now.
Good luck in your quest grasshopper. :D

Welcome to the forum. What's your name btw.

I don't build electrics, so no help here, but there are lots of very talented members here that do, and I'm sure will be able to help out with your questions.

Welcome to the forum Cash. (Johnny?)

I build customised electrics from scratch so my knowledge doesn't extend to buying pre-made and putting together partsocasters.
Having said that, I can provide a few more links for you in conjunction
with the others Sebastiaan and Nick have given.

(If you're after top notch gear.........

Also good quality

(I haven't heard great reports from this site though.)

Beware of anything off Ebay. I don't trust much in the way of parts
other than well known brands with hardware. I still buy direct.

The aussie sites Sebastiaan put up are great to deal with.

cheers,Stu

G'day Mr Cash and welcome, You mention the custom shop and I am wondering why, exactly what is it you are after. Are you wanting to build it your self so you can 'relic' it?. Instruments out of the custom shop are expensive but if you are just wanting a 50's strat and you are not fussy that it is the real deal, i.e. USA made 50's reissue then you could look at a Japan made 50's reissue which are in my opinion just as good especially if they have the USA alnico pickups in them and you would pick one up for under $1000au.
