Veneers

Post by sebastiaan56 » Mon Apr 20, 2009 1:36 pm

Having seen Allens jig I am interested in pursuing making my own purflings. There have been enough posts on not kidding myself that I can die a decent black so Im not going to do that. There appear to be plenty of alternatives (eg http://www.briggs.com.au/veneer_details.php?id=241).

Does anyone use pre cut veneers for this purpose? How do you do it? Where do you get them from?

I use dyed pear for black and cheesewood for white, both came from Tim Spittle of Australian Tonewoods. For thicker black I use fisch paper as used in neck laminations, I got that from John Watkins @ CNCguitarparts.com.

Cheers

Hi Sebastiaan, I get veneers from Peter Scott Young in Ringwood, east of Melbourne, always found him to be a very good supplier and has a good range of all kinds, including dyed veneer

I had made an inquiry to Briggs last year about getting some black veneer, but they were all out of stock and it would be a couple on months before any was in. I've not touched base with them again, but I should.

For small amounts I've got dyed wood veneer from Australian Luthier Supply. But to make anything more than some purflings or head plate veneers, it would get very pricey quick smart.

I was looking through my Lee Valley catalog tonight, and they have a really good assortment of veneers.
