Post by brian64 » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:31 pm

Did anyone see the new inventors tonight? I missed it, but a friend e-mailed me the link- http://kinnyguitar.com/Stereo%20Acoustic.htm

Interesting looking build.

Here's a link to some video, although I can't seem to get it working yet:

Wow, can you imagine finding a case for that?

I saw it, but was left totally unimpressed.

Aesthetics being just one point, but I'd be somewhat surprised if you could find any sort of market for this guitar.

Yuk,
The sound presented on the show did not impress me either.

Given how commonplace soundports are these days, I thought it was a stretch to call it an invention. An adaptation at best.

What is the difference between that and a Mariachi bass. If you put a extra sound hole in the mariachi bass wouldn't they be similar instruments with different shapes. That is, a larger cavity volume, bigger sound board and two holes. I suppose I'll never know as I am not likely to build something like this although I have been asked recently about a mariachi bass.

I do like the look of that cutaway and once again another builder has shoved another idea into the jumble of ideas that float around in my head.

What annoyed me was the pseudo scientific crap they used to justify it. The sound of a guitar does NOT come out of the soundholes. Certainly some of it does, but a lot gets radiated from the soundboard itself which fact the conveniently ignored. I got so irritated I sent them an email last night suggested that a little research, such as on the UNSW Acoustics site, would have shown that what they were spouting is what my colleague Dave Cohen calls 'Star Trek physics', with about as much scientific validity as "Beam me up, Scotty" or "Warp factor five, Mr Sulu"

They haven't replied yet :D

I too think the claims made of an "invention" are a bit bloated. Stereo micing a guitar is the norm for recording, and if you want it to be obvious, just have the mics at different distances from the guitar.

Here's one I'm working on:

I placed the sound ports so one would sort of feed each ear, though the guitar isn't done yet, so I don't know if it will make a hill of beans difference from one port.

Geez, don't hold back Graham.

I was in fact going to post the same sort of thing, but thought I might be a touch hard on the bloke.

Makes me wonder just how expert these "Expert Judges" are? Perhaps they are just being polite.

Nahh! Just the emperors new cloths syndrome Allen. It goes something like 'if you don't have a clue shut up, nod ya head, and don't ask any questions that may advertise the fact.'

Stereo??? So the bass from one hole and the treble from the other ay :? How about another couple of holes on the other side for quadraphonics...hold on a minute, that's it!!! I am building the next with an extra deep body about 300mm deep and a great big soundhole in the back with an extension like that German blokes axe in Allen's recent thread and some shoulder pads.

The idea being that the extension will act as a kind of collar for your neck and the pads will support the geeetar. You stick your head in the back soundhole and start play'in for true surround sound...brilliant!! 8)

I reckon I'm a natural at this luth'in stuff :D

P.S. Cool work Dennis, I can see how this would work well as a monitor.

Cheers

Kim

Next thing you know he's going to start on about the Dr's police call box really being nothing more than a phone booth.

er ...

That fella makes some seriously out-there stuff

I wonder what a guitar would sound like if it was ALL sound hole and no body? Infinitely loud, and omnipresent, I suppose. That's logical.
