I think any problems will become apparent within 2-3 months. Once the cross-linker kicks in after three weeks or so, if the film of shellac is too inflexible it is going to craze the first time a weather change comes through. Maybe whatever chemical reaction that is going on continues after that initial three week hardening period. We probably need someone with a chemical lab to measure the hardness and flexibility of a range of finishes over time and curing. I will ask an acquaintance in the ANU chemistry dept if he has any ideas.
