Yes, well that's all very well...

But is that one a curved sole plane ??

Jeremy.
Yes, it is flat soled. Here is a link to the Aussie LN site http://www.lie-nielsen.com.au/catalog.php?sku=1-101 In violin making this would be for thinning linings, planing the FB, braces and outside curves. I believe to be considered a proper violin makers you are supposed to use a gouge for all the shaping then scrapers, not little planes. But a little accurate and easy to adjust plane would be useful for a lots of jobs around guitar making. Its only 109bucks so is not much of a sting even for such a tiny thing. Take it to work with a few offcuts and plane your stresses away.
Cheers

Beautiful little plane! Although I guess it is almost as useless as my digital version I am now so depressed that I just trashed my Photoshop! :dri

Don't get depressed. Just pop outside and have a blow on your alpine horn and you'll feel alot better.

So, have any of you gentlemen received your planes yet? If you have, what do you think of them?

I've heard those little planes will give you haemorrhoids so big you'll need a wheelbarrow just to get around. On the brighter side the days of fighting little old ladies for a seat on the bus will be behind you and you may even get lucky if you slide to one side and make room to share. ..................(oh jealous me)

Kim, how did you manage to smear Preparation H onto your response? It shrank that sucker right up.

Just got the violin makers plane in the mail (after a mix-up with my address). Tiny, but decent heft, nice blade (flat, not curved), felt good on a test cut on some Lutz spruce.
Thanks,
GregL.

That's good to hear Greg. Thanks for giving us your initial impressions.

Found these at Lee Valley for those of you looking for a convex, and double convexed, bottom planes. Gotta love Veritas' stuff. I really out to unsubcribe to Lee Valley, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Its like getting the Sear's Toy catalog in October when you were a kid waiting for Christmas to get here.

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have firsthand experience with St James Bay luthier's planes?
I've done a couple of searches over the past few years and haven't really found much on them.
Kind of like how they look like they belong in a 18 century workshop.
Hope this is not off topic.
M.

I own one St James Bay that I picked up on eBay, that's how I found out about them. I really like the plane. It's about the size of a 100. Nice fit and finish and a decent quality blade. Since I came by it second hand, I have no idea what it was like new or if the blade in it was original.

Thanks Lillian,
I don't mind doing a little finishing on plane.
I know from experience that LN and LV tools work great out of the box but,
you know...dam recession.
Even tried making my own but when I combine the angles, steel and tone wood it's hard to
know if the finished finger plane is behaving like it should. Well Ok, it did really work that well.

If memory serves, St John's also had infill kits that looked like they would be great users once you get done with them.

I have finally got mine. I love it. It will get lots of use. It falls somewhere in between a block plane and a finger plane. Useful for jobs where a block plane is too big but it gives you more control than a finger plane. Is also much more comfortable in the hand than a finger plane. Is not much use for curved surfaces, but anything reasonably straight it is great.
