Thanks guys. Looks like I have some experimenting to do. I doubt that my wife will let me take her kitchen scales into the shed, but I'll try to sneak the bathroom scales out while no-one is watching, and see how I can get to just over 2kg per rod.

I am sure you can convince her that it is better to take the kitchen scale to the shop than the go-bar deck to the kitchen! :D

I think that the scale experiment is interesting to see that the rod pressure does not increase as you bend it more and more, rather than to try to analyse Euler's formula or knowing how many kilograms, pounds, newtons, etc. it exerts. For getting the "right pressure" I believe that it is sufficient to know that it's too much if you have a hard time to bend the rods. Bending them should be relatively easy and pressure should be adjusted by the number of rods rather by their thickness. The easier the rods bend, the greater number of them you will be able to place carefully one pretty close to the others.

Cheers,
Markus

Thanks Markus.

I think that either kitchen scale to shed or go-bar deck to kitchen would result in sharp knife to genitals.

It wasn't difficult for me to bend the thick rods (maybe I'm just super strong? ) but the lifting of the bench makes me wonder about these rods giving too much pressure. I was gluing hardwood at the time, so there was no damage to the surface that my regular sanding wouldn't fix.

I wonder if using a caul to spread the load is the answer to using the short rods, i.e. same force over a greater area to decrease the pressure.

Brian.
