You're going to do just what you did. Right move.
Eventually he may look at that, and say "what was I thinking?"
Then you can take your Sharpie and draw in some features for him.
Or even better, in keeping with the project, let him draw them in.

on my workbench....

I have revisited my very first (and only) classical build. After I got sick of my son saying it was like 'a plank of wood with rounded corners'.
Mmmmmmm :(

Before I started, I decided to test the back of the neck which was originally finished with Stewmac Brushing Lacquer, with Spenco VHT Genuine Lacquer Aerosol. Lo and behold it went on without any problems at all, even 4 weeks later it was 'compatible'.

So I have remodelled the neck (Hond Mahogany) then re grainfilledn and have out the VHT over the top, and even redone the whole guitar with it, again, straight over the old finish. In Melbourne, its been cold and wet, and I have no trouble with clouding or drying. But I do spray under a 500W halogen floodlight.

Finished off my 3/4 (style 5) .Body is all Camphor Laurel with a Cooktown Ironwood fret board.Played around with a few sets of strings.Started with some 10-48 PB but didn't have enough tension on the low E.Changed it to Nashville Tuning (12p-14p-10p-16p-20p-30W) for the Guitar show in Brisbane.More tension drove the top much better and the odd tuning( almost mandolin sound) was a hit with people who played it at the show.Very nice when finger picked.Moved on to some 11-50PB but still had a problem with the low E so it is now up to 12-53PB and it works well.Nice full sound and a small guitar to hold and play.Cheers.

Well, I have finally stolen enough time to get the binding jig done. All things considered, it seems to work well enough. I was able to cut the channel without any major mishaps. There is a place or two the needs tending to, but all in all I was very surprised with its performance. I will say though that I do not like the cradle I came up with so much. I'll end up redoing it, but for now it will work well enough for me to finish cutting the binding channels.

Thanks Steve. It feels good to be moving forward on this again. Though I'm back to waiting for purfling. Decided that I needed a thin black line to offset the binding. Nothing fancy, but a better, if not subtle delineation between the mahogany and the EIR bindings. I want to wait and glue the purflings onto the the binding before I bend them. Which is okay. I go see the oral surgeon tomorrow. Don't think I'll be in much of a mood to do anything for a few days.

Hey Michael great job on the six stringer, beautiful wood you've used, the grain lines look almost painted on :wink: It doesn't look like it, but is it bound with the Camphor Laurel too to hide end grains?

No bindings Nick O. Just clean joints to save time and trouble. I started doing it on ukes and thought it would look alright on the 3/4.The timber is busy enough by itself. Cheers

G'day Michael,
Can you tell me a little about Camphor Laurel . I'm able to get a good supply but no nothing of it's character . It looks very similar to the American Oregan Myrtle ( Californian Laurel ) Aka Peperwood , but I do know it certainly smells different :D
