Yes David. There is also input from Lundberg's classic book as well (eg half bindings on the top).

That's going to be a pretty cool instrument Martin. Can you play one? Have you got a little song worked out to give it a burl when its done? Or do you know someone who plays?

He's going to have to fashion some sort of Cod piece. But that's going to look a little odd on the next ride on the bike.

Re: Lute Progress - Test runs for cutting the rosette
This is an amazing collection of musicians.....my favourite bassist John Patitucci and my favourite percussionist Jack de Johnette. The Ozzie Oud player is doing extremely well mixing with such Jazz Royalty.J.F. Custom wrote: As a side, you may be interested in this. I was given this guys (Joseph Tawardos) new CD for christmas. Jazz meets the Middle East?? I know it is an Oud, not a lute but still... Pretty impressive skills from this young aussie, not to mention his brother the percussionist. As are the instruments of the luthier that built his Oud too - Faruk Turunz - http://www.oudmaster.com/. Interestingly, he utilizes nomex double tops on some of his Ouds.

The last few days have been spent working on the bridge. A lute bridge is indeed a weird kettle of fish...the wood is plum and there's not much to it.

Re: Lute Progress - Test runs for cutting the rosette
Found my 1.0mm drill bit this morning and got the string holes drilled. A dicey procedure where the holes are drilled from both sides of the bridge and then the drill is inserted and manually wiggled around to make the holes met up in the middle. Some makers drill the holes while the bridge is still in blank form and this method has its merits. Anyway I got lucky and the holes ended up all on target.

Looks good Martin, not to mention fun.
I may be masochistic but I really enjoy the detail work like this.
As a side, Joseph Tawardos (Oud musician above) is playing nearby in the Castlemaine festival coming up. May see if I can catch the show.

That looks a bit like a Stubai chisel Martin. I expect you did a little bit of shopping at Mik's when they were still around.

Yes Ive got a set of Stubais that came from MIK before they cratered. Theyre my favourite bench chisels. Most of the work on the bridge was done with My Robert Sorby paring chisels..also from MIK

Thanks Matthew. Superb for what they are but close to gross. I trust this will moderate the distain for banjo decorations
Just Googled Oud Music. I'll take banjo or resophonic any day but then I prefer 'Rocky Top' to 'Soggy Top'

who cares what they sound like. The bling is the thing.
Re: Lute Progress - Test runs for cutting the rosette
A wet day here in Adelaide so couldn't work on the new garden shed or do a bunch of other outside jobs. So I got the lute bridge glued on. The van Edwards tute uses a go bar deck to glue the bridge on but I prefer the clamping jig out of Lundbergs book.
