Shellac? On old piano parts?

Post by slowlearner » Thu Mar 20, 2025 9:29 pm

Hi all, I'm building an electric bass out of 150yo piano parts. I need to touch up some of the finish which I assume is shellac.

1. Where can I find some shellac easily? Ie. Bunnings or similar? Doesn't have to be amazing as the finish is old and damaged.
2. What can I use to clean masking tap glue off the old shellac.
3. Any other tips for this idiot?

Some pics of the project...

Thanks. :cl

Shellite is good for cleaning off sticky residue and won't damage the finish. I wouldn't use shellac from Bunnings it's pretty ordinary, plenty of places to order online, I've been getting mine from Restorers Choice it's good quality. Your decision. Wayne
