Guitar making book for HSC Students

Post by David Stiles » Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:39 pm

I have just started mentoring an HSC student making an acoustic guitar as HSC major work. This is my third time doing this. I have previously used the Gore/Gillet book however I am starting to feel that there 'the book' is at too high a level for the average student. They typically don't seem to be able to take it all in and discern what is important for them at their level.

I personally love 'the book' and anyone serious about lutherie should have it, but I do wonder if there is another option that would be better for the basics. Any suggestions would be welcome?

For classicals try Courtnall's "Making Master Guitars"
https://www.amazon.com.au/Making-Master ... 0709048092

For steel strings try Kinkaid's book

https://www.amazon.com.au/Build-Your-Ow ... B004SIHJUE

If buying these books is going to be difficult for the student let me know with a PM and I can lend you my copies.

I second Kinkaid book for steel strings. That is how I started on guitars.

Thanks for your replies.

I'll check out the Kincead Book. The School is looking a buying a book for students use so I probably will recommend it to them.

What would be a good source for a set of Dreadnought plans?

I just had quick check of my copy. Plans are somewhere else in the workshop but I'm pretty sure they're for an OM.

So, OM plans come with book? All the students so far wanted to make Dreadnought. I suppose the book works for Dreadnought just as well, provided good plans are sourced?

It shouldn't be hard sourcing dreadnought drawings. Making up your own set isn't that hard.
