Traditional Spanifh V-joint headstock

Post by Gregory USA » Wed Jul 30, 2008 2:48 pm

Do any members know how to excecute the traditional Spanish V-joint headstock?

Can anybody recommend an illustrated text, photo diary, DVD , etc of how to execute it?. I've fumbled arround with it on scrap wood, and have not yet succeeded with a perfect fit.

Any recommendations, references would be much appreciated. I really have no joinery experience! This method of construction is top of my list these days.

Thanks very much for any info m8's!! I'm much obliged! :)

No sweat Greg,

There is also this style from David Shram

http://www.mimf.com/library/schramm_covered_v-joint.htm

Or this one from Steve Sensenry

http://www.mimf.com/library/senseney_v- ... dstock.htm

But I think Joshua's is best 8)

Hi Gregofy,

be sure to post some picfures of how you do it as well,

fanks

sorry m8, thats the funniest typo Ive seen in a long while, the f is sometimes used as a double "S", most notably in middle english so your original title worked well.

I just notices that Joshua mentioned in the above tutorial called "Revisited" that he had lost some images from the original tutorial due to PC problems. I wish I had known this because I may have saved him some work given that I had saved that original page being that it was such good info . Anyhow, I will post those lost images here for what they are now worth, the text from the two tutorials is very much the same.

I'll include this one even though it is in both tutes just because it's sooo pretty.

Thanks must go to Joshua French, his input into these guitar building forums is sadly missed. But when you stop to consider how value the time of a Craftsman of his calibre is, it is little wonder he has been absent for so long.

Still, it would be nice to have him visit us some time.

All three methods are quite different and I appreciate your offering them for me to peruse. the covered-v looks impossible to me. Sensenrey's versions looks more in tune with what I will experiment with. I did try the Joshua French tutorial earlier and was not successful but i will revist it as well. These are all great starting points. I'll let you know what I figure out in the process.

If you are interested, you can look at my second guitar's V-joint neck process. I used Joshua French's method, poorly. I have now done three. I messed up the first two neck trying to automate the slot cutting process. I'm going back to the hand cut method, until I find a good way. I should have tried on Pine first. Live & learn! Anyway, the V-joints all came out, but not without a lot of tweaking and fitting. Getting full contact was more difficult than I envisioned when I started the process. Also, the one thing I have not figured out is what the best grain orientation is for chiseling the joint smooth. I thought I had it figured out, then when I cut it I was wrong. Still don't know what's best. Anyway, here's the link to my Photobucket Album for #2.

The key to getting a good fit, in my opinion, is chiseling the shoulders to have a guide for sawing.
