Hi all new to forum and guitar building
Hi I'd just like to introduce myself. My name is Craig I am new to guitar building. I have been a professional musician for 20 years (drummer) and my last gig was touring with trumpeter James Morrison for 5 years.
I stopped performing full time a few years ago and have been working at a specialty coffee roastery in Melbourne as a Barista trainer and coffee standards developer for our customers.
I am biting the bullet and starting to build a carved arch top guitar. I learned guitar for 8 years at school but haven't played now for 15 years so I am looking forward to getting back in to it. I look forward to sharing my progress with the forum.
best
Craig Simon
p.s. if any one wants to pop in for a great coffee and a chat see me at our roastery in bond st abbotsford. I came 5th in the recent Australian Barista Championships so the coffee will be alright!

As someone who has put many jittery hours of research into the link between caffeine and guitarmaking ( and who started the day with 2 fine long blacks and a carrot and ginger juice and will finish the night with 2 gigs finishing around 3:30 am ) may i be the first ...
Welcome aboard.

Hello Craig,
Welcome to the forum.
I'm building my first acoustic at the moment a hobby but my project is a weissenborn copy.
There are some very fine guitar builders on this forum who have helped me with my build and i'm sure will help you also. Plus, its a great place to hang about and talk guitar building techniques.
Cheers
Alan

Hello Craig
An archtop for a first guitar is a brave thing to do. Good luck with it. I trust you have Bennedetto's book, which is really the only thing out there on the subject. Look at as many archtops as you can and try to get a feel for the aesthetics of how they go together.
Then start making the expensive sawdust
cheers

Thanks all for the warm welcome,
yes I know I am bitting of a lot for my first try, I have the benedetto book on its way and I have read it a few times before so I am at least a little aware of what I am getting myself into! actually I probably don't realise what I am getting myself in for but I sure it will be a fun journey.

G'day Craig and welcome to the forum.
Yes an arch top will be a challenge for a first instrument but I'll be watching with interest.
I'm building an arch top mando at the moment and I reckon it'll take 4 or 5 instruments before I'm comfortable with the process.
Having said that I will definitely translate that skill into an arch top guitar
when the time is right. It's a little less daunting taking a gouge to a mando top.
Don't know whether you've seen any of Matthews' build threads but he's a clever bugger who builds double basses. Definitely worth a look as most of the techniques and skills will translate into what you want to do.
