MOP nut

Just wondering if anyone has used mop nuts? and if it's worth going to the trouble, any feedback would be appreciated ..

Mother pearl would have layering in it and associated planes of weakness....I'd go for bone or other material with a more homogenous structure.

Thanks Martin,, i just had a desire to add some bling to a build and thought a mop nut might be with considering, might give it a miss!

I used it once worked OK for me ,for someone else I would be a little apprehensive.I was looking at the strength of Corian the other day it has a bone color and the same constancy as the pretend bone types around polishes well too off the beaten track but there you go:)

I have inlayed bone nuts with mother of pearl and paua shell, but shell for the nut IMO would be a bad idea, they are soft in comparison to bone and break easily. To that end getting a piece thick enough to do the job, would require many laminates glued together

If you want something with physical properties suitable for a nut, but with a bling factor, go and look at the corian-like synthetic kitchen bench materials at your local kitchen renovation place. They have a huge range of colours, some sparkly, some are god-awful. You could probably get offcuts, or demo samples of last-year's colours, for absolutely nothing. Lots of people have used corian and similar materials for guitar nuts and saddles. Tusq, used by Taylor and many other manufacturers, is a very similar material to Corian.
