Where can you buy ebony
Where can you buy ebony
Hi I've only posted a couple of times.I'm looking to make a TRC using ebony, hence it won't be very big,but where can you buy Ebony in rough sawn state in New Zealand?.I can buy on Ebay, but I don't know if it's allow to come through customs. Then there would be clearances fee, duties fees, inspection taxes.....I'd rather just buy some.
I'm looking to make an ebony /maple/ebony lay up,so then when I cut out the shape, and champher it ,the white of the maple shows up.
Basic shape, they just don't make the any more,It's to fit a 1970's guitar.
So does anyone know?
Thank You

Re: Where can you buy ebony
I got about 2m of 100*100 Solomon Islands ebony from a sawmill in Mt Roskill a few years ago. It's nice and black with a few brown streaks. Hard as the hobs of Hell, weighs a ton. Think I paid about $100.
Don't know the address but it's about number 20 Carr Rd down a driveway. He had industrial quantities of SI ebony and New Guinea Rosewood - all bound for China.
Hope that helps

Re: Where can you buy ebony
Hi,
In Auckland..................
The Carr Road place would be Timspec, always worth a visit as the guys there are very helpful and have let me wander around their stacks in the past. I haven't seen any ebony there though.
South Pacific Timber in Mt Eden Auckland, had a long chunk in their odds and sods rack a while (years?) ago. You could call them and see what they have. It was a 150 x 50, dressed and about 2m long from memory. I doubt its still there but they might have some more.
Otherwise Rosenfeld Kidson are the other big importer.
And BBS Timber in Henderson Valley Road
Its always worth calling them to see what's lying around, rather than relying on the websites. They cannot list everything they have.
Those are the only ones I know about, but if there are any more I would be keen to hear about it.
Cheers

Re: Where can you buy ebony
Is importing ebony into NZ going to be any more complicated than any other tonewood? Nick would have had experience with this.

Re: Where can you buy ebony
Can't you just dock the end off a fingerboard blank?
That is how I've done timber matching truss rod covers in the past.

TRC....truss rod cover. Of course....silly me.
Allan's right.....just use an offcut. I've got shitloads of same in my shop...PM me dimensions and your address and I'll mail a piece to you. Alternately one of our NZ members might have an offcut lying around.

Assuming you haven't bought some already, I might have a bit - what do you need and where are you?
