rusty truss rod - how to condition it?
I have an old SG gibson in with an up bow problem - got the TR adjuster nut off with the application of heat but find the truss rod itself is rusty for around 60% of the thread - just wondering if i should use a rust converter to stabilise it - my fear is that it may react with the brass and form a bond so that next time someones goes in it may be frozen forever - i could just grease, pack it out with washers and close but rust tends to breed and i would hope to be able to stop that happening
any advice?
any advice?

Just lubricate it only
Re: rusty truss rod - how to condition it?
The rust on the steel could or would wear out the brass quicker I think . That's only a problem if its being adjusted a lot though .
A little oil is probably the go
One thing I learned of late , WD 40 is no good for preventing rust , it lubricates but when it dries , which it does do , it promotes rusting , apparently it attracts moisture . I was using it on machinery tops that are under a lean to , they kept rusting after the WD40 dried off . There is a fair bit of info on this if you google it.
Inox was suggested , its great . No rust return , it lubes the threads as well . I went and got 20 liters of it after I saw how far I got with one 300ml spray can.
That may be good for a truss rod if it's prone to a little more rusting ?

Inox spray is the only spay lube I use andits good for pretty much everything from spraying a door hinge to soaking old rusted car parts to get them to loosen, its a silicone lube, WD is a water disperant, hence the name and the rust!auscab wrote:

If you read the MSDS for WD40 youll notice it consists largely of solvents....

Inox is a Silicon lube Is it ?? where did you hear that ? I thought it was a Lanolin based product .
I have not read anything about whats in it and don't remember where I got the Lanolin idea from .
You wouldn't want it anywhere near pre polishing woodwork if it is .
Why , if something is advertized as disperses water , does the metal rust ?

When I started using it in the early 90's it was - it's possible it changed ingredients and I never noticed. Still does a good job thoughauscab wrote:Inox is a Silicon lube Is it ?? where did you hear that ? I thought it was a Lanolin based product .

I use lanolin on anything like that. You could use an eye dropper or something similar to apply.

Inox MSDS sheet lists ingredients as "proprietry products".
I suspect it has a few solvents in it as it takes the gum and resin off the blade of my hedgetrimmer quite nicely.

When LANOTEC products became readily availably quite a few years ago, I thought it would be good for rust prevention, mentioning it to a pharmaceutical chemist relation his first reaction was that lanolin is hydroscopic. While it might be good for minimising rust initially, once the solvent has gone ,it would "attract" water. Not what one wants.
