Salvaging timber - Old japanese bolt on
Got an old 1970s jap bolt on acoustic. Been meaning to sort it for a few years now, but I picked it up yesterday and the top has fallen apart... and its plywood. I'd throw it all in the bin except... it seems like the back and sides are Brazilian rosewood (not just a veneer). Wondering how to pull it apart and save the timber for something else?

Have you tested the side and back Pete, to see if they are indeed BRW (sand and smell, BRW has quite a distinctive and beautiful smell)? Just seems strange to me that they'd use "the holy grail of tonewoods" and then slap a plywood top on it when a solid spruce top would still be the cheapest part of it! It would be a bit like owning a Ferrari then dropping a VW Beetle engine into it

Hi Pete
Have a look at this post, it refers to previous posts on replacing the soundboard.

Thanks Jeff.
So now the question is, how do I undo all the glue? Steam?
Yeahnah. Except for this timber, the rest of the guitar is a VERY cheaply built jap bolt on. The back and sides are the best bits by a long way. The rest is pretty nasty. Even the inlays on the neck are nasty. Beyond all that, I don't do acoustics really... and I'm not interested. I'd use this timber to build some sort of chambered electric.Bruce McC wrote:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5462&p=62873&hilit= ... ard#p62873

Hi Pete,
The two guitars I re-topped one was from the sixties and the other the old 1925 Lyon Healy and both used hide glue so it was easy to remove both tops. I think the 70s guitars used synthetic glues but I may be wrong. If it is hide glue your dealing with I used a flat knife and a hairdryer which worked a treat. I have heaps of pictures of the event if your interested.
Cheers
Alan

You could sent it to John the Woodrat, I sure he would be glad to convert this guitar into a whatnot.slowlearner wrote:Yeahnah. [...] , I don't do acoustics really... and I'm not interested.Bruce McC wrote:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5462&p=62873&hilit= ... ard#p62873
