No worries Hesh. You are easy to please.

The string file is a good idea to get that smooth worn in slot.
(Will I mention that you-know-who has that tip in his book? Nuh).

You could probably use a grit of some sort in there to help the string cut. Polishing compound perhaps?

The nameless one also suggests you glue bits of string to sticks to make a set of files. Save the bits you cut off the end. I had forgotten that but it seems like a great tip in a pinch or if you don't want to go the more costly road.

You talking about Voldemort Dominic?

I've set up 4 guitars this week and the G string slot has bound up on all of them without further work with "string flossing" or a light rub with 2000 grit paper.

You can see that the vee in it is causing the problem.

I'm essentially lazy and don't want to have to double handle my g-string nut slot if at all possible.

It also speeds things up - time is money.

Allan was kind enough to send me down his set of nut files to try.

I did a nut for a new guitar today and I must say these files crap all over the Stewmac ones we've been using.

They are Japanese Hosco files (same as Dave White uses)

They cut quicker, the curve in the file lessens the tendency to have the end of the file heading perilously toward the finished headstock, and they don't catch like the Stewmac ones do.

The g-string slot profile is heaps better as well - no catching of the string at all.

Big thanks to Allen for his generosity and we'll be getting a set of these in the very near future.

Bob,
I have a set of these also. I got mine from Gerard Gilet ,and I think he may still stock them. From memory , they weren't cheap.

Cheers , Craig

I think that I got mine from Gilet Guitars. And yes, he still has them . Australian Luthier Supplies carries something that looks very similar on sale. I'd drop them a note and see if they are the same.

Gilet has them for $104 and Aust Luthiers Supplies $75.92.

They look like the same files.

I know it sounds expensive but if they do the job properly I don't mind forking out a bit extra.

We bought the entire set of the Stewmac ones which cost $155.

They'll come in handy for something I'm sure. But every nut we've done has had the string bind up on the G string and sometimes on the D.

I just ordered them from Aust Luthiers Supplies.

The $75.92 is without GST which I discovered on the last page of the Paypal form.

They ended up costing $97 delivered.

And yes they are still cheap at that price if they do the job Craig.

"G" String? How Tuesday. Set the boys loose and go commando I say. Just don't lean too far over the belt sander or you may find your filing more nuts than you had intended

Cheers
