OUtsourcing Inlays

Post by nnickusa » Sat May 18, 2013 3:32 pm

Anyone got a good referral for a CNC and/or laser cutting outfit that knows what we're looking for and won't break the bank?

I've got a design and think it'd be plain stupid of me to try and cut it out by hand....

Appreciate any suggestions....

Cheers,

G'day Nick, THIS guy on the woodwork forum is set up to do what you want, I have not used him as I like DIY but it looks like he is on the ball.

Nick I just re-read your post. The reason I suggested that place was cause for some reason I had it in my head that you wanted someone to do the whole thing for you including cutting the pockets but if you just want the shell cut only and cut the pockets yourself then DePaule Supply at www.luthiersupply.com is another option.

Thanks, Rod, Jim.

I work(ed) at Gilet Guitars in Sydney and we get ours done by George Gurian. He does both inlay and headplates with NO gaps.

I think each head plate comes out at about $35 or $40 each (inlayed mop logo and wood). Not much for a perfect job with everything done.
There are initial set up costs though.

We get custom double length bwb's made at the same time which I highly recommend. Double the price as single length but better then twice as good, especially for doing a shell purling on the top which possesses 3 joins which are weaker then a straight through (double length) bwb's.

Hope this helps,

Jim
Thank you kind sir,
None of my inlays are from Gurian. The flowers I do myself and the letters are from Andy Depaul. At $4 each, I can't buy the shell for that let alone time!

I've been meaning to get on here for years but now im out from under Gerard Gilet's warm wing, I thought I should get to it :) Look forward to the coming years and attaining blackwood status!. Ive probably built about 200 guitars with it at Gilet Guitars. Lovely stuff indeed.
