Part for Performax 16/32

Post by Bob Connor » Thu May 02, 2013 12:40 pm

Bit of a long shot but does anyone have a spare spider for a Performax/Jet 16/32 Drum sander they'd like to part with?

Mine died at the weekend and the sander is unusable without a new one.

It's part number 50-2209

On the pic below it's part number 58

Carbatec are telling me it'll take 6 weeks.

I've got one on order from the US but the company is waiting for the part to come from Jet.

Regards
Bob, Geelong

Bob, it looks like a fairly standard coupling, which most bearing suppliers would stock. Try a Google search on "universal joint". RS stocks lots of different sizes. Find one that suits and see if you can get it (at probably at less than half of what RS charge) from CBC or similar.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to replace the bearings on the bandsaw today so I'll make some enquiries locally about the couplings.

Bob,

you could try Gregory Machinery in Brisbane. They were Jet distributors before CarbaTec took over and they used to carry a fairly extensive supply of spare parts because they had a contract to supply schools and had to carry a full range of spare parts as part of the contract.

I did find a compatible coupling today in Geelong made by the Lovejoy company for about $27.

The coupling, however has to be machined to fit the shaft.

I took it to the local machine shop and it was going to cost $150 to get it machined and keyed.

So we used the spider out of that set to get the sander working again and I'll wait for the Performax parts to come from the US.

I still need to replace the coupling jaws but at least I can use the sander in the meantime.

I've got a mate who will machine the coupling for me (eventually) but I was buggered if I was going to pay $150 for it.

Regards
Bob, Geelong

Jayzus! That's a hell of an hourly rate because as I see it, even if the couplings start out blank, in a properly equiped shop I would have quoted no more than an hour for both halves! Maybe they were too busy and didn't want the work so over quoted  Still, glad you found an 'alternative' to the problem.
