American in Sydney, looking for opportunity/experience

Post by LizzyPie » Mon Jan 21, 2013 10:04 am

Hi all!

For 4 years my (now) husband and I have been trying to get to Australia, just to experience living outside of the US for a time, and, Hooray! We've finally made it. The original plan was for me to come and look for work/apprenticeship, (thus being able to go anywhere in the country) and he was going to work on screenplays and coding/programming on his own, but because fate is funny he had a job within 3 days of being here. :p Now that we have finally sorted out a place to live here in Sydney, it's time for me to hold up my end, and here seemed a good place to start, because otherwise I have no idea!

I graduated last year with a degree in cabinetmaking. After my schooling the only thing I was sure about was that I didn't want to make kitchen cabinets. (which we never really went into anyway- it was more of a fine woodworking education without being overly fancy) I arrived on these shores with the hope of gaining some luthier experience. I play Irish banjo and will one day branch out to 5 string, so that is honestly what I'm most keen on. I had emailed some banjo Aussie banjo makers before we came over here but never got any replies. Most of their websites haven't been updated since 2006ish anyway, so I don't even know if they're still around. Moot point really, as I don't know that there are any around Sydney.

Anyhow, thanks for reading. That was kind of long winded!
I haven't built an instrument, and will be sharing an apartment with 4 other people, (not including the husband) so getting a kit isn't really an option. I'm not particularly interested in taking a course to build a guitar, though if absolutely nothing pans out I suppose I will look into that as an option. What I am interested in is working with someone already making instruments. Guitars, Harps, Ukes, Dulcimers, doesn't matter to me. I will work for cheap- I will work for so cheap that I will work for free. I will happily push the broom. I just want to learn and explore this further. I'm friendly and reliable, and cheap, as I mentioned. ;) And, now tethered to the Sydney area as well, but I will train an hour out if I have to.

I understand that many or most of you do this is your spare time, and do other things to pay the bills. Perhaps someone though is willing to take someone like me on, or knows of someone who would. I will also take other useful advice, because I have no idea where to start otherwise. I suppose my next course of action would be tracking down every instrument builder in the Sydney area through google and asking if they'd take an apprentice.

Anyhow, thanks for reading. That was kind of long winded! whew!

Welcome aboard Lizzie i hope you enjoy your stay in the land of Aus. You do offer a pretty good deal, labour doesn't come much cheaper than FREE!, i'm one of those that luth's in his spare time, and i live quite a bit more than an hour out of Sydney so unfortunately i won't be able to help you with your endeavour but you may just get lucky on this forum as there are a few professionals who lurk in these here parts that may very well wish to impart some knowledge your way in exchange for a bit of help around the shop!!
Good luck Lizzie,
Rod.

Welcome Lizzie,

A Yank and a Banjo Player....If you're a Republican as well it's going to be hard. :) Just kidding I'm a lapsed Yank but now a staunch Aussie. More Americans should see the U.S. from afar.

Well, I'm more like 4 days drive from Sydney, but welcome to the forum, and a shed tour and beer is always there to anyone that comes this far north.

I'm about a 7 day swim (or a 3 hour flight) from Sydney in New Zealand but welcome to the forum (and Australia!) Lizzy. You have some very good builders offering shed tours there, if you could get out to them I would recommend taking them up on their offers even if only to suck up a little of their knowledge/wisdom, and I wish you well in finding some sort of work.
As Bill mentioned, we do like to rag on Americans and Banjo players a bit here but it's all in good fun so I hope you stick around, ask plenty of questions and give us a hard time back.

Welcome, it could be worth your time to pass by Gerard Gilet's place, buy something there not to waste his time like a lutherie book/wood/accessories and check out his workshop and all the people working there, they're usually nice and once you get Gerard to start talking he usually doesn't shut up for a while so you also get a huge dose of invaluable lutherie info at the same, maybe if you suck up to him enough and show your motivation you may get lucky, good luck

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice guys! And, no, I'm deffo NOT a republican. ;)

For those of you around Sydney who kindly offered a tour and a chat, I will take you up on that and should be contacting you within the week. We don't own a car, but might be signing up for a car share program soon, so I'll have to work that out.

For those of you who kindly offered not around Sydney, I'll keep it in mind when we get out and about. :) Except for you Nick, as we just came from NZ. Didn't think to check here for shed tours before we left for there, should have though. We loved NZ, but everyone going to bed at 8 pm threw us for a bit of a loop.

Lizzie, the Kiwi's don't have television yet  , so not much else to do after the dishes are washed but go to bed, that's probably the reason why they have large families, :lmao
