Looks like this is the one Bob! Booze ( single malts) & socks were the present of choice for me this year and i must admit, I'm in need of both of them No zoot unfortunately but then for those that aren't " in the business", they seem to find it hard understanding why we go all glassy eyed looking at lovely bits of dead tree!

Nah! I'm the one that's well trained. This box left Alaska on the 10th of December and I actually need it pronto. Still, 16 kilos of spruce should last me for a while

Well, I've got one of these milling machines somewhere between Taiwan and Cairns. Was sure hoping it would be here before the wet set in. Now I haven't got a freaking clue how I'm going to get it from the front drive to the shed when the yard gets wet and sloppy. And I don't think I have enough beer to get Liam to pack it back there for me.

What are you planning on using it for Allen?

I've been on and off again for a few years about a CNC machine for some of the work I'd like to do, but keep coming back to the point of needing to program something in a CAD program just to do a simple task. Not a big deal when you want to make many of the same object, but a pain when you just want something quick. When you've got the manual system, those sorts of things are just a lot easier. Go to tool box and grab cutter. Insert cutter in chuck and go to work.

No shortage of projects for this. And the imagination is pretty much your only limits. I've talked to quite a few people with mills, and not one of them regrets having one in the shed.

First up its a rock solid and accurate drill press. Something I get the shits with every time I use the one I have.

I imagine that first up are going to be some deadly accurate bridge slots. I suppose those slots for the CF truss rods will be a no brainer. Then there are a lot of art deco style designs I have in mind involving a lot of things that just can't be done with anything else except a CNC machine. Making jigs for other tasks. Templates in alloy or perspex.....well, I think it may keep me busy for some time.

It was a heck of a lot of research on finding a quality machine that would do what I wanted, yet still be able to fit into my shed. There are heaps of ones out there that may do more, but the weight and foot print of them is just too big. I really had to ask myself what it was that I would actually do with the machine I would get. And that eliminated most of the contenders. And lots that are really nothing more than a glorified drill press that I know would have me tearing what's left of my hair out in a week.

Christmas gifts were a bit thin on the ground but I happen to be at my parent's place outside of Canberra and found a box of "turning blanks" in the attic. Apparently my late uncle, an artist and woodturner, left the box of bits to my mother. Amongst it I found a lovely piece of blackheart sassafras and a myrtle burl, each about 7" cube. All very well dried and waxed. Should be a couple of years worth of killer rosettes.
