Can I glue a bridge over shellac?

Post by Shane Woonton » Sat Jun 30, 2012 7:31 am

Hi guys,

Getting close to gluing the bridge on. This build I put a coat of zinsser shellac on the top to help protect it a bit during assembly, binding etc. Question is; do I need to scrape the shellac off the soundboard under the bridge? Or can I glue straight onto it? Only reason I ask is that it seems common practice to shellac the binding/rosette channels to prevent leaching of some glues.

Thoughts?

Shane

What Jeff said.

I tend to finish (French Polish) my guitars first and then fix on the bridge last. I fix masking tape over much of the bridge area during finishing so I only have to remove a small amount of finish from the periphery of the bridge footprint prior to bridge glue-up.

Thanks guys, it's as I expected.

Martin, typically I do the same and mask off the bridge area prior to finishing. This time the concept was lost somewhere in the midst of all the excitement. :?

Cheers,

Shane
