A New Tool.

Post by Phil » Sat May 12, 2012 6:15 pm

I would not post this suggestion here except for two reasons, first, I have not seen this idea anywhere else, second, everyone that I have showed it to has been amazed at the results. I thought everyone knew this trick, but seemingly this is not the case, so here goes.....

OK, you get a Stanley knife blade and stick it in your vice, sharp edge upperwards, then you burnish the edge at an angle of 30 degrees off vertical with a bit of hard steel. I use the tapered part of a nail punch for this. You slik the steel back and forth 5-6 times, and get the bestest scraper blade you have ever used. Mark the blade on the side of the burr with a bit of masking tape, so you don't get to use it backwards the next day.

It works like magic!

Thanks Bill,

These are great for levelling drop fill in a finish, just remember to put a bit of tape on each end. 8)

Cheers

Using teflon tape, gets the blade closer to the surface as well, it also allows the blade to glide over the areas you dont want scraped.

I simply drag the edge of the blade once over the corner of my vise to achieve the shovel edge.
