Posted this on the Ukulele Underground and Allen suggested that I trouble you folks:
I know that I have a remote love affair with Australian trees. But I don't know how you keep them straight-such a remarkable diversity.
Two Eucalyptus trees were cut down in my neighborhood (Los Angeles area). I've been told by local tree folks that the two trees in question (of which, I salvaged a bunch) were Marginata, Resinifera, Diversicolor. Of course there are hundreds of other choices since they plant everything here.
So after poring over my Australian Bio/Tree resources, I thought I'd ask you folks what I.D. resources you use when in doubt. I'm cutting it in any event because it's so gorgeous, but I thought I'd ask. Will post some better pictures when I get it cut.. Thanks, in advance.
P.S. The white/hazey color is the wax I applied

The definitive guide to Eucalypts are the Brooker / Kleinig texts . It's a three part series that go region by region . A field guide to Eucalypts .
What i can say of Eucalypts broadly ( and particularly young trees ) is that they are quite difficult to dry succesfully . I'd recommend sawing down into thin , quartersawn boards , stickering very closely and heavily weighting the stacks . Allow for quite a lot of shrinkage and likely some collapse .
As the other posts have stated , I.D without foliage and fruits ( particularly in trees planted outside of their home range ) is notoriously difficult .
All the best with it .
