It's see-through wood Rod. Sort of stuff you buy on line from a dodgie sod.

I'll bite. I'll call it "flame figure".

Re: Figure this?
I don't know you'll find a "correct term" per se, as many figures are named 'descriptively' more than scientifically.
In that respect, call it what you will - it's pretty wild stuff. I'd say more a burl like large birds-eye... Rolls off the tongue

Re: Figure this?
Id call it Quilt, see here for the Maple version, http://www.violinslover.com/picture_det ... 291{8}2102
But then again it could be really big birds eyes as well, http://www.orsayfurniture.com/Figured%20hardwoods.htm how big is the piece of timber?

make mine fifths........
Re: Figure this?
Would have to go with quilt if not going with a new descriptive which might be 'random quilt' - it certainly is busy. Nice figure and if you can sort the surface checking.... who knows.

Re: Figure this?
What are the dimensions? It looks like burl to me.

Re: Figure this?
That would be some big bird Sebastiaan maybe Emu eye. Looks like burl but I figure it is a bit of tree trunk or you wouldn't have asked the question in the first place.

Re: Figure this?
Kim, dimensions are 100x38x3000, those dimensions suggest to me "not burl".
I think "flamed" is a pretty accurate description thanks.
Cheers,, Rod.

Looks more like a quilt on fire.Puff wrote:Would have to go with quilt if not going with a new descriptive which might be 'random quilt' - it certainly is busy. Nice figure and if you can sort the surface checking.... who knows.

Re: Figure this?
I could live with "Fire Quilt" - good call.
Analine rub with black then yellow then red -yum. Maybe black, red, yellow and red again. Still need to sort those surface checks though.

Re: Figure this?
Flame would be an 'apt' description given its appearance, however timber with 'flame' figure is usually already associacted with perhaps a less tight or consistent 'fiddleback' like figure - however inappropriately.
But meh - what's in a name when it looks like that

"Beard of God" figure from the special cut "Ultima billet" of the once in a lifetime "Pandora log". (Ecologically responsible windfall harvested)

Re: Figure this?
I've heard some timbers with this sort of figure (usually Bubinga) described as "Waterfall" figure

& the quilted described as Pomele

(Although they look pretty similar to me!) But yours I could also almost describe as a burl Rod. Certainly an interesting piece, not very stable but would make some nice headplates. What does it come up like wetted?

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Hoi!
Dunno why, but the word "sworly" just jumped intp my head!
(This is probably not a scientific descriptor.)
