I use Behlens 4F grade pumice for pore filling prior to french polishing. I get the stuff in from Lee Valley. One container will last you ages.

Alan, if you only need a small amount and you're in a hurry to get it I can spare some from my stash.

Thanks for the link Martin and the offer for a small amount but I will buy some from them. I've built five acoustics now and I'm happy with my woodwork efforts although they can always be improved. It's my finish methods that I need to address so I want to get the pore filling stage up to a better standard and I want to keep using shellac too.

One question Martin, should I get some Rottonstone or do you use the fine Pumice for the final rub down also?

Cheers

Alan,

Rottenstone you can get here in Australia from Ubeaut. I havent used the stuff. With a bit of care you can refine your french polishing technique to the point where a good shine can be achieved....its all in the spiriting off technique. All I do is do a final polish up using Mcguires car polishing products.

Goods and Chattels carries Rottenstone in their Restoration Hware catalogue.
Service second to none from them as well.
