I would appreciate your thoughts on the following bits of wood I came across today.
This first one is supposed to be English Ripple Ash. It has a reasonable level of figure in it - wasn't allowed to wet it to show you. 11" x 2" x 36"
Unfotunately, I don't recall the nature of the cut.

The next was called Tassie Pinkheart Leatherwood. 14" x 1.5" x 34"
I have attempted to show its grain pattern in the diagram below. I have no feel for runout. I am never sure how far to push things when back & sides include sections that are on the quarter in one area but flat in another, such in the centre of the heart wood in this photo. I found a link of the forum that speaks favourlably of Leatherwood for necks, but that getting enough width for backs in not common. What do you think.

If it was mine, I would cut that center out then glue the two remaining pieces together. I think that would make it pretty stable and as close to quarter sawn as you can get.
