You may remember a while ago i posted a poll on some guitar designs i was working on a for a chain store here in NZ.
Well after much consideration we decided on the

So Thought i'd post a couple of progress photos on the prototype you all voted and commented on.

"Well I didn't vote for it" (Monty Python- Holy Grail)

Looking very 'woody' there Christian, should look excellent when you've finished. Do they plan on having one in each store nationwide or just a few 'testers' in certain stores (read Auckland)? If they plan on nationwide I'll have to pop into the Christchurch store and pinch some ideas...err... I mean....peruse your work.

I recently got some Silk Tree from Rarefind Timbers (after drooling at Daves Maccrocarpa geetar) and also some Tanekaha which they've recommended as some possible soundboard material. Have you had any dealings with this wood? It's not quite as light as Spruce but probably similar in weight to Macro.

Great stuff - indigenous wood build, as it should be. That kauri looks a lot like Englsih cherry which I use for my cherryleles to great effect.

Can't quite get my head round the curly wirly soundhole and stuff and wonder how you glue the bridge but hey, I just build ukuleles :)

Pete, I'd wager he uses a vacuum clamp.

They were all the rage one time - you still see martin and the others using bridge clamps...

Thanks Lillian,
yip your right i use a vacuum clamp they are really handy.
HAHA Holy Grail Brilliant Nick !!!

Yip they will have them scattered around the country ChCh will definetely get one, so you can have a play and cast your engineer/luthier eye over one.

Hav'nt used any Silk tree, I use Northland Kauri Timber merchants up here in Kerikeri they showed me some Tanekaha apparently grows up this way, it looked quite good similar to Kauri ,could be a bit heavy, i would liked to have tried some but they didnt have anything over 150mm wide.If you have a Spare set i'll trade you a set of very nice Swamp Kauri suitable for a top.

Kahikatea is worth a look too,can be a very good top wood.

Cheers,

Christian.

Big thanks to Bob for rescuing this thread.
Just to update you on the prototype, the Rockshop loved it and immediately put an order in
for six guitars three standard and three cutaway. So look out Aucks,Wellies and Chch.
and here are the pics of the prototype and the new venetian cutaway version.

Cheers,
Christian,

I hope the Rock Shop in Chch puts them in their front window...last time I walked past the shop they had some very ugly yellow SpongeBob Squarepants plywood guitars on display.

Pretty guitars. I like the simple edges - or is that all to be bound in the production version??

Do you reinforce the back of the spiral in the sound hole?
