since the "crisis" I can't remember if I posted this and had any replies ...
Anyone had experience with Jelutong in instrument making? Apparently it carves really well. But is it as weak as the guy in the shop said it was?
I'm thinking neck/pegbox/scroll options. I can get nce big bits of jelutong but the traditional maple is harder to get there in Oz in the size I need for DB.

Re: jelutong
Yeah Mathew, i've seen Jelutong at Mathews timber, yardman said it was nice to carve, didn't say anybody was using it for instruments. They have stacks of maple, what sort of sizes are you talking? Might be able to check it out for you.
Maton haunt the place and as soon as a new load comes in they rifle through it and buy up heaps at a time. Most of the stuff i've seen there is 150 x50, 200x50, don't know if that's big enough for you.
Cheers,,, Rod

For a quick peek. Best properties are weight, how well it carves and takes a drill.

The bits i have laying around have a satisfying thud when you tap them, ie no great acoustic property. But it carves really well and holds detail beautifully.
make mine fifths........

Yes - for patterns for castings it is superb.
