Power Outage in Alice

Post by Clancy » Sun Oct 17, 2010 6:07 pm

G'day Gang,

Well the Guitar Widow has taken the next step towards the Fame and Fortune "she" needs to keep me at home making guitars  and has accepted an offer in Alice Springs :!:

Since it would be terribly rude of me not to accompany her  , it seems I will have to pack up the workshop for the 12 month term of her contract.

Rather than get the Luthier DT's in the Red Heart I have decided to pack the 2 OM boxs I've just closed up, the materials necessary to finish them, and all materials necessary to build 1 new guitar.
Oh, and all my Hand Tools in a toolbox.

This will mean performing all work over the next year without power tools.
Although my use of power tools is usually restricted to my Pedestal Drill & 10" Bandsaw, I'm still a bit nervous to be doing without them.
Especially the Drill which I use to make holes, shape with a sanding drum, thickness with a Safety Plane, etc, etc.
It really is a "Jack of all Trades".

As for not having a bandsaw, well I can saw curves well but a straight cut is rarely spot on

I've got till the end of the week to cut & kerf the linings, slice up any bracewood etc, box up the hand planes, chisels and hand saws and then the workshop will be closed up & used to store our furniture :(

So, in 12 months time, when the workshop is re-opened and aired out, the furniture removed and the dried out rat carcasses dispossed of, well I may be so confident with my hand tools that I don't even think to switch the power to the workshop back on again.
     yeah, right

Cheers
Craig

Adelaide's just down the road so if you need access to a bandie or other power tools then give me a bell.

Darwin is just up the road and you are welcome to a choice of small or medium bandsaw. I have a spare drill press but I reckon one of those cheapy Bunnings ones would be okay for a year rather than that drive up the road, mind you, you hardly have to touch the steering wheel from Alice to here.

Martin, Jim -thanks for the offer guys.
My daytime duties (being Mr Mum to my 2 sons) will probably limit my build time for the year to just the one new instrument - for which I'm packing everything as if it was a kit.

Should I find that I have more build time I expect that I will need use of a bandsaw.
We're planning a trip to Darwin next winter and Victor Harbour next spring/summer so hopefully I'll be able to catch up with both of you.

Bob, your welcome to sit in the passenger seat & find out how many stubbies it is to Darwin. :dri
Of course, the results of every experiment MUST be repeatable to be fact, so I'll take the passenger seat on the way back to Alice thanks.

I reckon it would be quite a few, the number you get to before you forget what you were counting sounds about right.
