Fret miter box

Post by Lillian » Sun Sep 27, 2009 1:39 am

My head is stuffed with cold meds. I'm not allowed to go play with sharp things attached to power cords. So I'm drawing up plans for jigs I need to get done.

I have a template to cut the frets, but don't want to spend the money on StewMac's setup. It's just a miter box, besides, I bought a Japanese fret saw and its only about 19mm wide. I don't think theirs would work anyway.

So I'm trying to figure a few things out, like length of the bed and were the pin should be in relationship to the blade slot. And honestly it doesn't seem to matter, which is why I'm asking. Am I missing something obvious to the non-chemically altered?

As far as I can figure out, it doesn't matter at all where the pin is, other than I like to have it reasonably close to the slot that I'm cutting, so I don't have to waste too much wood.

I made my miter box to use the LMI fretting saw before I went the table saw route. Not a big deal, and I'm not sure why you'd go out and spend that much money on something that you should be able to make. After all, a guitar is a lot more difficult to knock together than a simple miter box.

Thanks Allen. That's kinda what I thought, but wanted to be sure I wasn't over looking something.
