Lillian....picture an old luthiers workshop in Spain. Piles of wood on shelves, poking out of any available space. Thats how things are looking at the moment....next time home Ill be looking into some proper shelving and perhaps turning roof space area into a tonewood store.

Cheers Martin

Also picture the crusty/dusty old luthier (picture Gepetto) working over by the window, Chisel in one hand, a neck in the other and pipe protruding out past whizzened, lined lips. Glasses perched on top of a balding pate, a few friendly mice looking up at our man with interest, curled shavings of Spanish Cedar all around

Watch out world tonewood supplies!! Although I'm sure Tim's doing the Arkwright hand rub! When Tim & uncle Bob state "Temporarily out of stock- New supplies arriving soon" what they're really saying is "We're holding back the good stuff until Martin gets paid." or "Martins just been paid and we really are out of stock!"
"Jesus Loves You."
Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Sounds wonderful actually, but I would have thought you would have the garden dug up and an underground vault put in by now.

OK people, I'm here to show everyone my complete ignorance and ask what the acronym WAS stands for...but I am fairly confidant that I have it!

Please be gentle, I am sick...I have WAS...I just have to clarify what it is! :D

WAS: wood acquisition syndrome, an overwhelming need to add to one's secret stash and when found out about tends to lead to nights on the sofa out in the shed

TAS: tool acquisition syndrome, see above

In very rare cases it can be terminal. Be aware of how WAS is affecting your home life. If your friends (not us) start to look at you sideways, you need to call us for an intervention. We will be supportive, but we don't ever want to read about the repercussions of a particularly nasty flare up in the papers.

To that end, search for Kim's sage advice in acquiring, camouflaging and storing your stash. Well worth the read.

The house is sitting on about a foot of clay and then its soild sandstone so a wood vault would involve some serious earth moving machinery.

The roof space over the workshop was cunningly designed for future conversion into useable storage space so I will build my secret wood attic.

Being a sufferer of WAS for the past 25 years all I can say is the only cure/relief is: GET MORE WOOD! That and spending time in rehab (aka re-sawing)
May the dust be on you.

So all we'd need to do is bring a can opener and go through the roof to, ah, borrow a few sets while you're away? Okay. Thanks for the heads up.

...WAS...acronym built on same lines as GAS - guitar acquisition syndrome. Once I just had GAS - now I have WAS as well.

It won't surprise you all to know that dulcimer builders suffer too. Particularly when Bob says he has some blackwood for me and hands over 12 pairs!
Panic not, dear friends, I use stuff that is only suitable for guitar sides.

WAS is unavoidable in Lutherie. So... my advice to folks who are anticipating getting into Lutherie is to find and purchase the very most comfortable, overstuffed leather sofa that you can find. A dog is a good idea too. :D
