What another workshop, or two?

Post by Taffy Evans » Fri Aug 21, 2009 10:30 am

Workshops, the pictures I forgot to show.
Long time ago I started showing my work areas, I remember showing the repair shop and the building workshop [a couple of reminders here], but I just realized that I did not show the office show room and the machine shop. These are what I’m showing now.

I think that back then I may have wanted to wait until the office/showroom was finished, but as can be seen in the photos, it still is not complete. In fact it is worse due to the fact that a large wooded show unit was removed so the place could be treated for termites. These little critters were eradicated before they got their teeth into any structures. Or my tone wood stash.

As a matter of interest, the guy told me that as the workshop slab had been laid up against the house slab they had come up in the crack in-between and headed for the house side not the workshop. For this reason I also got rid of the huge wooden cabinet in the machine shop that housed most of the tone wood, and put my timber stash up on racks near the roof, the sliced stuff anyway.

Anyway the work shop story.

When the house was considered for purchase its main attraction, to me any way was the size of the work area attached to the house. I estimated one could get 14 medium size cars into the space. Over the years it has been divided into four main areas. As shown here. The other attraction was it was out of the city limits so neighbors are not a problem. I’ve run machines till 10 o clock at night, no worries.
The office was important as I needed to keep punters out of the work areas, and it’s a nice place to show what I do and what I’ve collected. Many of my customers drive out from Townsville, 260klm round trip, so it’s a good place to have a coffee and a chat. Although it sounds a big area it is jammed full of what make the place tick, I am always hitting my mobile or cordless phones [that hang off my belt] on machines and benches, if I don’t swing my hips enough. You should see me on the “catwalk’.

I will try to caption the photos as this is getting a bit long winded.

What a dream to have all that space. I bet that you've got at least one of everything tucked away somewhere in there. Thanks for the tour.

Yipes!

14 medium sized cars alright - the rooms just keep going and going :)
Each time I thought it had to end, up popped more as yet, unexplored realms of luthiery madness...

And here am I at the opposite end of the spectrum - you may get just one medium size car in my space but you'd have to cut it into thirds first ! It's small, but it's finished, just, and not a moment too soon. I have so much inspiration and so much to do; what a lovely problem. Just have to learn to use space wisely... very wisely... indeed...

What a great space you have and has the cosy/homely used workshop feel about it too. I note you had no trouble filling the space mind you - maybe you should have considered buying the house next door too?

Nice workshop Taff - Hesh eat your heart out :D

Nice thick chunks'o'tonewood too...

Thanks,

Jeremy.

I agree with all said so far Taffy, a really well set up workshop you have there but then you deserve it being the inventive pro repairman/builder that you are.

Thanks for the look see.

Cheers

Taff buddy thanks for posting about your shop(s) - I really enjoyed seeing your Global Headquarters.

With all of the instruments that you have collected I am wondering if you have any favorites?

Thanks
